June 23, 2016: Congratulations to Dr. Robert Koenekoop who was just approved by Health Canada and McGill for a placebo controlled trial that will start this year. A note from Dr. Koenekoop about this exciting venture:
"Previously thought to be untreatable and incurable, the inherited retinal degenerations (IRD) that lead to human blindness are entering a new phase of excitement. After twenty years of genetic and genomic discoveries leading to insights into disease mechanisms and disease pathways, we are now entering a phase of treatment discoveries for diseases like retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA). One of the key recent discoveries is that there are three populations of photoreceptors in these diseased and dying retinas of children and adults. One population is not seeing because of cell death, another population is seeing because they are still alive, but the new discovery is that there is a third population of non seeing cells that are actually alive, dormant and sleeping. They can be woken up with gene replacement, genetic editing and pharmacological agents. We started a program of drug testing with QLT Inc in 2009, testing efficacy and safety in children with specific mutations in RPE65 and LRAT. We then tested adults. Both groups show significant improvements in fields and vision and functional MRI of the brain in most patients. We published these exciting results in Lancet and PLOS one. Now we are preparing for a placebo controlled trial, just approved by Health Canada and McGill. We will start this year."
